Custom Tees for Customers offering a “Custom Tease”
Coyote! This was an order for custom tees used to promote and raise funds for the first national hookers’ convention in 1974, “The Year of the Whore.” Margot St. James was Coyote (Call Off Your Old Tired Ethics), our good customer and friend who was advocating for legalized prostitution in California, trying to make her and her “girls” LEGAL. One Halloween (and I did go to this, because I knew it was going to be quite an event), at the Cow Palace in San Francisco with about 15,000 people, Margot makes her magnificent entrance by riding on a huge elephant, in how you might think that an entrance made in the 70s in San Francisco would be, and the women there were very showy, let’s say “skimpily dressed,” as well as the men, almost to the point where clothing was optional. This truly was us ‘living on the fringes,’ experiencing first-hand the will for change, and was not to be missed.
Recently, in 2015, I had been in San Francisco, and I was with my friend Kenny reminiscing about the work we had done in the 70s, he asked if I remembered the time Margot and the girls came to Hippo to pick up those custom tee shirts?
“Here they are,” Ken said, I said, “how would you like to pay?”
They said “do you want cash or trade?”
“Oh my god, I’m looking at six beautiful willing women, and, and, and Ken, what did I say?”
“Well you said ‘cash.’”
“Oh, I must’ve been trying to meet payroll.”
